May News Letter

Introduction

Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC uses a whole tree approach to create innovative low carbon products thereby converting waste wood into a valuable resource that; creates green jobs, significantly reduces carbon emissions and promotes sustainability within communities of West central Scotland.

Check out our sites at;

www.sustainablewoodsolutions.co.uk

www.facebook.com/pages/SWS

http://twitter.com/#!/swoodsolutions

If you would like to find out more add, follow or give us a call; Office 0141 647 4883, Bruce 07792590488, Paul 07764511108

Timber

We are now working with an estate near Inverness to supply enough timber to keep two kilns busy. This will produce over 70m3 of kiln dried timber this year. The estate is FSC certified so providence is not an issue for once!

We have milled over 20m3 so far and will be milling at least once a month to build up stocks ahead of the kilns. Check out the photos of our first load of sawn timber to arrive here in Glasgow on our face book page.

Our aim is to build up stocks of Oak and Elm initially in three stock sizes, 1”, 1.5” and 2”. We also have other species available in smaller amounts, Ash, Sycamore, Beech and Walnut. If you have any jobs coming up we can juggle the kilning schedules to include different thickness or species. Give us a call to discuss your requirements.

As a social enterprise we work closely with schools and colleges on using Scottish timber and recycling. To date Sustainable Wood Solutions have supplied approx. 1m3 of kiln dried timber to Glasgow Metropolitan College for their Furniture design and restoration courses.

Education

We are pleased to announce that Louise McAllister has now joined the team, in a voluntary capacity for now! Louise is a great addition to our team, having previously receiving a SURF award for her work on community and school gardens. Her experience of consultation and delivery of outdoor learning will enable Sustainable Wood Solutions to build up community links and expand our work with schools. We work closely with staff and pupils to develop appropriate projects and assist with funding applications. Please contact us if you have any projects in mind, please contact Louise, louise@sustainablewoodsolutions.co.uk

Following on from our work funded by Woodland Trust Scotland planting trees with children, we are now developing several projects across the region. This includes food growing, tree planting, wildflower meadows, natural play areas and education programs on carbon reduction, recycling and sustainability.

We can now offer training to schools, colleges and nurseries in natural play, linking with the curriculum for excellence and eco schools programs. Training will include designing natural play, staff development, and learning through outdoor play.

SWS are working on a new program of team building and corporate social responsibility projects. We can offer sessions here in Glasgow and are developing a program of events on the estate that provides our timber near Inverness. Activities available include timber recycling, tree planting, willow working coppicing, etc ………………….

Products

Our Whisky flooring has just been used as part of the shop fitting for the soon to open Good Spirits whisky shop, Bath St Glasgow. We are also working with several architects and designers on creative uses for this innovative product. Bruce has been working hard developing an exciting range of picture frames. The range includes whisky barrel and Scottish hardwood timbers to create exclusive designs that look great in a wide range of situations.

Biomass

With oil prices on the rise, spills in the Gulf of Mexico and instability across the Middle East, now is the time to free your organisation from fossil fuels! Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC produces an alternative fuel, biomass wood chips that is carbon neutral and produced from waste timber produced locally by tree surgeons. Each year 70,000+ tonnes of tree waste is dumped in landfill – GCVGN report. SWS believe this waste is far too valuable to be dumped in this way.

Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC dries the waste timber for 12 months, and then chips the logs and grades to meet strict industry size specifications. In this way we can deliver high quality woodchip locally.

The long awaited Renewable Heat Scheme has been launched, this gives grant payments over a 20 year period to support the developing biomass market. This together with support from the Carbon Trust and Community Energy Scotland mean there has never been a better time to install a biomass boiler!

If you are interested in reducing your fuel bills and carbon footprint Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC can assess if biomass would work for you. We will visit you to check your current fuel use and give you a range of renewable fuel options. Customers receive regular updates detailing their carbon and cash savings.

Sustainable Wood Solutions CIC works closely with Rural Generation on biomass boiler installations established over 15 years ago and with over 200 boilers installed. By linking our high quality fuel with a leading installer SWS can deliver a comprehensive biomass package.

There are a number of options suitable for most situations and with grant funding coming from government there are several banks willing to lend against capital costs. Another way to deliver biomass that reduces capital costs is an ESCO – Energy Supply Company, the customer only pays for the heat used through a meter.

If you would like to find out more add, follow or give us a call; Office 0141 647 4883, Bruce 07792590488, Paul 07764511108

Our aim of establishing stocks of kiln dried Elm and Oak came a step closer last week. We travelled away up north last week for the first of many regular trips to mill some of the finest timber i have seen for years. Three of us left early for the long drive and milled timber for two whole days.
This is a big step for Sustainable wood Solutions, first step of our plan to mill and dry 70+ cubic meters of Oak and Elm for cabinet makers this year. This will now be dried and made available to makers accross Scotland.
We currently have Oak, Ash and Cherry in our kiln here in Glasgow, though each load so far has sold before the drying has been completed!
If you are looking for regular supplies of Scottish timber let us know what you need.

Small portion of our recently milled Oak
